Celebrating the 50th release on JNN I've invited some of the best (netlabel)artists from around the globe to join this massive compilationalbum. In total 52 artists joined to create the finest in what is available in experimental music these days. Much of what you hear is unreleased work with the exception of a handful. These tracks have been carefully mastered and put together to present to you a 4 CD epic journey into sound. Together with the artwork the puzzle lies ahead to find out what...

From 1967 through 1970 my father, composer Harold Shapero, was director of the Brandeis University electronic music studio. The studio was equipped with a Buchla 100 modular synthesizer, which was at the time the state of the art. Though I was not a Brandeis student, but still in high school, my father allowed and encouraged me to work with the Buchla in the studio. I started working there when I was 14 and continued until I was 17. The portrait you see of me with the Buchla was taken (by my...

Live recordings from digital algorhythms. This is generative glitch that walks the far boarders of experimentalism, yet its content is so smooth and delicious. Meandering between the likes of Xenakis and Ikeda, this takes on a journey of its own. And even though this may be the shortest release on Just not Normal, I fell deeply in love with this album; beware as you may too!

In Greek mythology, Ixion and Tantalus were both legendary for their extreme hubris and the dire consequences that befell them as a result. Each was granted an audience with the gods, and betrayed the generosity shown to them. So many tales abound of the transgressions these two figures made against the gods that there is no one story to explain their unique fates. Yet it is precisely these unenviable fates for which they are most remembered. In its most simple form, the tale of Ixion is that...

C Reider, the man behind Vuzh and the man behind the ‘Electret Quintet’ series has certainly taken a different direction with this single track release. Amidst the field of drones, drummachines and recorded sounds he creates an ambience of experimental finesse. Dive into a strange world that will enchant your ears and take you on journeys not taken before.

Yes, its true. This mighty fine album is not brand new; it has been released and available in the past on Jamendo. But all good things come to an end, and there where there are endings there are new beginnings. Anime Hill has graciously offered his very first album for a release on Just not normal and we couldn’t be more proud of this dark ambientish but certainly gorgeous experimentalic album. Enjoy the rich sounds and deep churns if you have not before and hopefully somewhere in 2010...

Mike Metlay's body of work has always included abstract noisescapes, a passion he's enjoyed for nearly three decades. (A recent example is JNN014, The Redundancy Of Suicide by mindSpiral.) Mike's main noisescaping device is "Thing One", the Oberheim Xpander analog modular synthesizer he has been playing for 25 years now. Currently, as for the past 10 years or more, he uses Thing One primarily for self-modulating noise textures that can be manipulated in real time with broad control...

"Stereoscopic laid is an experiment in sound. What you are hearing are not 'sounds', but in fact are 'images'. The idea behind this album was to generate sound tracks equivalent to stereoscopic images, in which you see a slightly different point of view of the same scene with each eye, creating the illusion of depth. MindSpiral is a series of collaborations between Mike Metlay and anyone who doesn’t hang up when he calls. This incarnation, mind6Spiral, resulted when Tim Walters (see e.g. JNN03) traded a night’s lodging (10 August 2008) for one hour of feeding audio from his laptop into Mike’s mixer, while Mike added his own sounds and a live audience on StillStream.com listened. minds and machines. this is existential combat. to make order where nothing but the faint line of the possible wrinkled perception. the process is as follows -- tracks like stabs of meat and protein put down with a midi controller or randomly devised by generative software and flung into ableton live. this is where the fun begins. switching in and out and out and in with soft synths until a netherworld forms like a radio transmission twenty kilometers below the surface in some fantastic and yet...

Reaching the halfway point of this full moon concert series one may wonder; can it go deeper, can it go better. The answer is given by the artist himself in this sixth edition. A near full hour of a single track improv that rocks the boat. Droney ambient culled with the fingerprint guitar sounds and solos of the master himself. Let not these words keep you from downloading this album on the spot. You will not regret it. A year with Luna: 12 monthly meditations on the Full moon Volume six: All...

Synth improv overlaid with some gems from the public domain. Processed answering machine messages - details of a private life, now featureless and divested of form. Taken together, these pieces constitute a meditation on the death of vision, when attainment provokes failure and hope comes to represent nothing more than bastardized nostalgia. Must we believe that everything leads to something? Or may it not be the case that events and people simply fall back into fragments of themselves,...

Today March 22nd 2011 is World Water day. By special request from Luis release of his latest field recordings album is on this special day. For those familiar with the works from Luis, a portugese sound enthusiast, know that his recordings are of very high quality and always very pure in its essence and so is this release. Pure water, so pure it makes the listener thirsty. Locations where these recordings are from: Local das Gravacoes; Sobral de S. Miguel (Covilha); Agroal (Pomares, Arganil):...

So, about 1 and 3/4 years ago, I finished a super long ambient track for my Zondagmorgen (remember this?!) project, entitled La Fin du Monde. My intentions, at the time, were to release it though IMP. That never happened, and it's been sitting on my hard drive ever since. I pulled it out, on a whim, this morning and listened to it on the bus today. It's actually better than I remember, so I thought I would send it your way to see if you would be interested in including it in as an upcoming JNN...

Amazing how an entire year can just vannish, though not in the night of the full moons. It is then when Dennis Moser comes alive. Live from a vennue somewhere in Second Life. Only once more after this most beautiful series of meandering ambience, that has been given a throne and a home for years to come. One slight reminder; on December 27th the entire series will be broadcasted on Stillstream radio with live hosting. Make sure to be there! A year with Luna: 12 monthly meditations on the Full...

Of all the remarkable releases from all over the globe this certainly stole my heart with its most weird and live recorded tracks that meander somewhere between the sound of The Orb, Merzbow and Zappa. A remarkable trio indeed to make its appearance in an album notice. AKU is a group of artists that got together in the Smooth Studio in Bandang, Indonesia in Januari 2010. One not often hears music from this island group, but there is most definately a lively experimental scene happening there....

Like Stream69, Kris Cadwell also revisits the JNN-catalog with a successor to his first album ‘Offerings’ (JNN070). Another beauty and indepth look into the sound of a visual artist exploring not in paint or color, but in tone. The diversity of this artist is remarkable; at times this feels very Boards of Canada when he can also change his cloth and create a beautiful deep field of drones and beatfree song. Kris certainly shows his wardrobe and wears it in style. We’re very happen to...

It was only natural the two came together after releases on timetheory and treetrunk. Mystahr provided a 40 minute live improv when mystified in his turn touched his drone-fingers on the material. Par takes (perhaps a series in the making) will take you into the depths of sound and drones.

Founder and curator of the Stereo-Type netlabel, KJ began producing electronic in 1999, having always played conventional instruments. Obsessed with sound, he has graphed charts of frequencies which cross reference chromatics vs. brain wave ranges and has used these maths in extensive self-experimentation, applying the results to composition. As “choenyi” and “Echo Yin” he has released varietey of netlabels since 2006. The alias “dxiv” predates these for many years and implies works...

Cezary Gapik (also know as CEZAR) was born in Czestochowa, Poland in 1963. He started his musical activity in 1980 as an animator of punk rock bands. Soon enough he discovered new sounds which were brought by the punk rock rebellion. Cabaret Voltaire, Public Image Ltd. or other “new wave” bands had an enormous influence on the perception of music by Cezar. Plunging into the fundaments of musical avant-garde (Karlheinz Stockhausen, Morton Feldman, Luc Ferrari, La Monte Young), the appearance...

I should rather frown upon myself for not having shared any of his music yet on a previous NTNS radio show. Alas so it is. After his earlier Website Story released on Just not Normal I can truly...

Of Places and Moments is a celebration of the art of field recordings. The tracks to be included utilized recordings from the Sounds Found Project, a repository of user-contributed field recordings. The source recordings were mangled, manipulated, abused and violated, in some cases beyond recognition, to create 18 distinctly different interpretations ranging from minimal drone, to noise, to electronica.

The twelve pieces on this album reflect an ongoing interest in the temporal processes underlying musical creation from two apparently contrasting yet ultimately similar musical contexts. Post-modernist, systems-based pieces for traditional classical ensembles stand side-by-side with more static electronic works. In the former category the obvious reference points might be the work of Steve Reich and other minimalists but in contrast to the extended time-scales operative in such work, the pieces...
